MENU THE ARTS SOCIETY GRANTA

In 1973 NADFAS and the V&A realized there was no complete list of church artefacts, and set out to produce a systematic inventory of the contents of local churches.  Between them they established a system and format for a record of church furnishings.  Over 1500 churches have now been recorded, 13 by Granta.

Ideally two recorders work on each of eight sections which include Memorials, Metalwork, Textiles, Windows etc.  Fieldwork and photography in the church take about 18 months followed by another 18 months of compiling, checking and re-checking before a bound copy of the record is presented to the church.  Other copies, some digital, go to the V&A Arts Library, English Heritage archive, the ChurchCare library, and the local CRO.

Recorders have handbooks to help them, as well as training and study days.  We are all volunteers and enjoy our sessions together in the church where we have access behind the scenes.  We work fortnightly from April to October.
